The hospital bag freebies actually worth packing
A small, honest list of the free pregnancy samples that earn their space in your bag — plus the ones you can skip.
By The freebie. desk
Your hospital bag is not the place for optimism. You need a few things that fit, a few things you can throw away, and nothing that needs explaining to a midwife at 3am.
Free pregnancy kits are a nice place to start, but only some of the contents are useful. Here is how I sort them.
What earns its space
- Maternity pads and disposable underwear. Not glamorous, but the first 24 hours are not glamorous either.
- A mini toothpaste and a soft toothbrush. Hospital bags get packed early; toiletries get forgotten.
- A belly band or support belt, if the fit is adjustable. Skip anything sized to a specific week.
- A printed checklist. Phone batteries die and hospital Wi-Fi is unreliable.
What to leave at home
Sample sachets of stretch-mark oil are fine, but you do not need six of them. The same goes for tiny bottles of shampoo: decant one into a 50ml travel bottle and save the bag space.
If a kit asks for card details, close the tab. A free prenatal sample should not need a payment method, and it definitely should not auto-enrol you in a subscription.
A note on timing
Most hospital-bag kits ship in one to two weeks, but some brands batch them monthly. Request yours in the second trimester, then check the dispatch email before you pack. If it has not arrived by 36 weeks, follow up once and move on — you can buy the essentials for less than the cost of a takeaway.
The best freebie is the one that arrives before you need it. Everything else is just extra luggage.
